HKUST has partnered with Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co.,Ltd. (Chang Guang Satellite) to jointly develop a remote sensing satellite, “HKUST-FYBB#1”. The satellite entered the designated orbit for operation at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province on 25th August 2023 at 12.59 pm. The remote sensing satellite will create ‘digital twins’ of the Hong Kong landscape to predict and monitor hazards from landslides, as well as monitoring pollution, vegetation, and other aspects of the landscape. This will create a comprehensive environmental monitoring and disaster forecasting system for Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
